Overview
This journey explores Laos’ wartime history, following routes linked to the Secret War and the former Ho Chi Minh Trail. Visits include important historical sites such as the caves of Viengxay, Lima Site 85, and remote regions that played a significant role during the conflict. Alongside these historical experiences, the programme also passes through mountain landscapes, ethnic minority villages, and lesser-visited parts of northern and central Laos. Natural highlights include the Plain of Jars, Kong Lor Cave, the Hinboun River, and the Xe Ban Fai Cave. The journey concludes with a scenic overland route back to Vientiane, offering a broader perspective on Laos beyond the country’s more traditional travel routes.

Day by Day
Vientiane to Sam Neua and Viengxay Caves
▼Fly from Vientiane to Sam Neua and continue by road to the historic Viengxay Caves. An audio-guided visit introduces the caves used by Pathet Lao leaders during the “Secret War,” including the Kaysone Phomvihane Cave and Prince Souphanouvong Cave.
Sam Neua, Lima Site 85 and Pu Phati
▼Travel through the mountains to Pu Phati, the former site of Lima Site 85, a covert U.S. radar base during the Vietnam War. Climb to the summit by steel staircase to explore the remains of the base and take in the dramatic views over the surrounding landscape.
Sam Neua to Phonsavan
▼Journey south through mountain scenery, with stops at Ban Saleuy, a nearby waterfall, Tham Piu Cave, and Ban Tha Jok. These visits give insight into local village life and the lasting impact of the Indochina War on the region.
Plain of Jars exploration
▼Begin with a visit to the MAG office to learn about UXO clearance work in Xieng Khuang. The drive out to visit some of the famous Plain of Jars Sites, starting at the picturesque Jar Site 2 and Jar Site 3, consisting over around 150 jars located on top of a hill, offering great views. After visiting the Mulberry Farm, visit a nearby viewpoint for panoramic scenery.
Xieng Khuang to Hinboun via Muang Khoun
▼Start early for the long drive through central Laos, stopping at Muang Khoun to explore ancient pagoda ruins, That Foun Stupa, and Wat Phia Wat. Continue through mountain landscapes and limestone scenery before arriving at the riverside lodge in Hinboun.
Kong Lor Cave and Hinboun River kayaking
▼Explore the spectacular Kong Lor Cave by local boat, travelling through its 7-kilometre underground river and visiting its impressive stalagmite formations. In the afternoon, kayak along the scenic Hinboun River, surrounded by karst mountains and peaceful riverbank views.
Hinboun to Ban Langkhang
▼Travel to Ban Thabak and board a unique boat made from repurposed aircraft fuel tanks for a cruise along the Nam Theun River. Continue through the Nam Theun National Protected Area to Ban Langkhang for a simple overnight stay.
Ban Langkhang, Uncle Ky and Xe Ban Fai retreat
▼Travel by jeep to Ban Nongbua, located near the northern tip of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, and meet Uncle Ky, who shares his personal story of surviving years of bombing in a nearby cave. Continue to Ban Phakpanang and travel by boat along the Xe Bang Fai River to a simple riverside retreat.
Xe Ban Fai Cave to Thakhek
▼Explore Tham Xe Ban Fai, one of the largest river caves in the world, first by boat and then on foot inside the vast cave system. In the afternoon, transfer to Thakhek, a relaxed Mekong riverside town.
Thakhek to Vientiane
▼Drive back to Vientiane with stops at Ban Thong Na Mee Hmong Market and the revered Prabaht Ponsan stupa. Arrive in the capital by mid-afternoon, with the rest of the day at leisure.
